UNDERSTANDING NEURODIVERSITY

There is no single way
to experience the world.

Neurodiversity describes the natural variety in how human brains work. People differ in how they learn, pay attention, communicate, process information, and respond to the world around them.

“Neurodivergent” is often used to describe people whose ways of thinking and processing differ from what is considered typical. This can include autistic people, people with ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, Tourette syndrome, and many other experiences.

Neurodiversity is not itself a diagnosis. Each person has their own strengths, challenges, and support needs. Recognizing differences also means taking difficulties, disabilities, and barriers seriously.

Our counselling services

Support for what matters in your life.

Emotional wellbeing

Explore feelings, stress, anxiety, overwhelm, and self-esteem. Work toward ways of coping that make sense for you.

Navigating daily life

Talk through routines, transitions, sensory needs, and challenges with planning or getting started on tasks.

MHASO offers support across a broad range of neurodivergent experiences. Your needs and goals help guide the conversation. Areas you may want to explore include:

Relationships & communication

Family & caregiver support

Explore communication differences, boundaries, belonging, and ways to express your needs at home, school, or work.

Build understanding of a loved one’s experience, explore behavioural concerns in context, and find ways to support one another.

An affirming approach

It starts with being heard.

Counselling is a space to explore your experiences and build on your strengths, while making room for what feels difficult. Together, you and your counsellor can identify goals and approaches that fit your life.

Share what helps you feel comfortable, including communication preferences, sensory needs, or the pace of sessions. The intake team can discuss your needs and help identify an appropriate clinician.
